Sheff Wed Faces Serious Challenges, Says New Football Authority

'We will play a key role in football's future' - newly appointed regulator the regulator's chair

The Championship club's current difficulties constitute a "serious issue" and the new football authority is aiming to acquire authority to examine team situations in similar circumstances, the recently named head the regulator has announced.

Through a comprehensive talk, the chairman, who was appointed on Monday, showed understanding towards the club's followers.

The regulator engaged with four fan organizations associated with the South Yorkshire club in recent days.

The Championship side have been experiencing difficulties in multiple areas in the current year, with the club delaying salary disbursements on multiple instances, including in last month.

"Obviously the club has become a significant problem for EFL and a significant problem for football," Kogan told.

"The club represents one of the great brands for English football and in recent days we have met supporters' organizations.

"Our aim is to acquire the ability... which will allow us to have the club and similar situations submitted for our review if they warrant scrutiny and acted upon."

Economic Challenges and Proprietorship Status

Wednesday's embattled owner Dejphon Chansiri suggested earlier this year he would be open to selling the club at the stadium, but he has not been able to secure a deal with potential new owners.

Failure to pay player wages on time in March and May caused limitations by the league officials in June, stopping Wednesday from completing any transfers or loans for the next three transfer windows, although the ban was rescinded in late summer.

Official's Viewpoint

The chairman stated: "The position was created for the Owls followers, teams facing challenges where fans are dedicated to a local institution that has represented their community in numerous instances.

"I completely understand the club's situation, as I do for each organization that over recent decades have faced collapse, or been close to going to the wall, for reasons that have nothing to do with the followers."

Inquired if the oversight body could require an chairman to relinquish a club if they are judged inappropriate, the chairman responded: "When asking whether 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the answer is once we assemble the facts and know what's going on, we will."

But the chairman emphasized that compelling proprietors to divest clubs would be viewed as the ultimate measure and the authority would rather to cooperate with proprietors.

"Our least desirable course of action is commence engagement with an individual club, an specific proprietor, without being in a position to cooperate with that chairman to fix the problems affecting the organization and the proprietor's dealing with," the regulator explained.

"In actuality, when you look back over the history of the game, over the last 20 or 30 years there have been some owners, not many, but some who have been irresponsible in the way which they've been managing their organizations and finally decline to assume obligation for the coming years."

'Mistakes could erase significant advances'

The regulator engaged officials from numerous teams to lay out the remit of the authority recently and insisted it was a "forward-thinking discussion" with a "high level of engagement" from the lower divisions to the top flight.

"This position carries substantial significance, because if errors are made, if the world of football gets it wrong, the remarkable development accomplished might evaporate swiftly," Kogan said.

"And that's what nobody wants in the realm of domestic football is a substantial accomplishment - we've got to keep it going.

"Considerable investment entering the sport and has come into football for the recent generations, because there's no guarantee it will persist in entering the game, which is one of the reasons why I think we have to adopt a precise perspective on challenges and obviously, of the immediate future."

Premier League Concerns

The Premier League opposed the establishment of an oversight body because of apprehensions regarding adverse consequences on the top-flight's competitiveness, but Kogan said: "I'm absolutely committed to the success and growth as an financial organization of the Premier League.

"Being fully aware of the apprehension regarding damaging the division as a high-quality offering of the nation. But concurrently, if you talk to the Premier League after this week's discussion, they would have had a substantial amount of confidence -and, indeed, they have been advising us privately they have a high level of reassurance."

Political Connections

The regulator remains subject to a "comprehensive investigation" by the official appointments authority after he acknowledged providing funds to the Labour Party in the past.

The 68-year-old donated money to government minister the politician's campaign, along with that of the government leader.

"I have been entirely transparent regarding my previous political affiliation [with Labour], and that party membership ceased the day the parliamentary committee confirmed my selection," the chairman stated.

"I currently have no participation in any sort of politics."
