‘Online Monitoring’: Unilever Aims to Harness Vaseline’s Social Media Breakthrough.
First identified more than 150 years ago in the oil fields of Pennsylvania, the modest tin of Vaseline could hardly be considered an clear candidate for online content feeds.
However, its rise as a TikTok talking point has placed it at the forefront of an promotional upheaval, in which large companies are investing heavily in content creators and reducing expenditure on marketing items in traditional media.
The Path from Petroleum to Platforms
The petroleum jelly was first manufactured in the 1870s by scientist Robert Cheeseborough, who noticed oil rig workers applying to their skin with a byproduct of the drilling process. Currently, a wave of amateur-created clips have recorded its extensive utilization in “practical tricks”.
It has been touted as a solution for polishing footwear or prolonging the scent of perfume, along with a cure for noisy doorways. It has even been deployed to stop the scourge of snack dust adhering to hands.
Harnessing the Hype
Noticing its viral resurgence, strategists within the corporation amplified the hacks by having their research teams evaluate the claims and providing creators with the outcome data.
Claims that Vaseline reduced the sensation of spicy food on lips were confirmed. So too were ideas it could lengthen scent duration and rejuvenate purses. Claims that it would brighten smiles or make eyelashes longer were disproven.
The ‘Digital Ear’ Approach
Outdoor advertising and television commercials would once have dominated Unilever’s advertising drive. However, this online trend has helped convince executives to turbocharge spending on content creators.
This tracking of digital spaces to guide corporate planning has been termed “social listening”. The company's chief executive, recently appointed, has indicated the goal is to spend a full fifty percent of its huge ad budget on digital creator content.
Evolving With Audience Behavior
Selina Sykes, who is leading the online push, said the company was merely adjusting to novel methods of connecting with customers. She said participating on platforms “without spoiling the atmosphere” was essential.
“What is the key to genuine brand integration? This has perpetually been our aim as brands, since the era of community gossip and discussing household products.
“We are witnessing a departure from a one-to-many model, where we would just transmit messages … Today, it's numerous dialogues, diverse communities. The evolution of platform algorithms means that these groups seem specialized, yet they are vast.
“If you can make sure your brand is shared by other people, mentioned by individuals, that fosters reliability and pertinence. Creators are critical to that. We’re really scaling this advocacy model.”
A Fundamental Consumption Turn
This plan mirrors seismic changes happening in audience habits, with younger consumers devoting greater hours to digital networks than television, magazines or radio.
The shift is reflected in declines in broadcast and newspaper ads. Across Britain, commercial funding for primary networks have fallen by more than £600m in actual value since the end of the last decade.
Influencer Marketing Expansion
This further signifies a blurring of media roles as large companies almost become production houses themselves, partnering with hundreds of content creators to enhance their items.
An industry expert from a leading agency said: “Naturally, an exodus of attention from conventional channels and their time is increasingly on digital video and image apps than they are consuming linear broadcasts or printed matter.
“Numerous corporations inform us audiences believe endorsements from the individuals they follow compared to commercial messages. This is a persistent pattern.”
He added firms may also cut expenditures by targeting content creators over expensive broadcast campaigns, which also enables easier content adjustment to gauge performance.
Such methods are increasing. Promotional expenditure on digital creator partnerships is growing fourfold quicker than total media spending. Across the United States, it has increased by over 100% since 2021 and is forecast to attain substantial figures in 2025.
TV's Lasting Role
Even with this transformation, experts said they believed television commercials still played a key part to play, as TV channels continued to possess the influence to drive countrywide discourse.
The executive noted: “One of the highest return-on-investment media opportunities is still the Super Bowl. The issue isn't broadcasters claiming: ‘Oh, we’re not relevant any more.’ It’s about who’s capturing attention … There is undoubtedly a future for traditional media.”
