A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals using such medications need to be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the way of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural management.
